Why a Steel Frame Stops a Wood Gate from Sagging

Almost everyone has fought a sagging wood gate — dragging on the concrete, a latch that no longer lines up. The steel-framed cedar gate on this project was built so that never happens.

Why wood gates sag

A gate hangs from one side. All its weight acts as leverage on the top hinge and on the hinge post. Wood frames rack out of square over time as joints loosen and the wood shrinks, and the latch side drops.

What the steel frame changes

A welded steel frame is rigid: it does not rack. The cedar boards are fastened into the frame as cladding, so they add privacy and looks but carry no structural load. Hung on steel posts, the whole assembly stays square.

  • Gate stays square
  • Latch keeps lining up
  • No dragging on the drive
  • Cedar boards replaceable individually

Easier to live with

A gate that swings freely is a gate that gets closed. That matters for security, for keeping pets in and for anyone who opens it with their hands full.

Frequently asked questions

Can you add a steel frame to my existing wood gate?

Often the better value is to rebuild the gate on a steel frame, reusing the design but not the tired wood.

Does the steel frame show?

On most builds it is visible as a slim dark border, which many owners like. It can be hidden on the outside face if preferred.

How long do steel-framed gates last?

Far longer than timber-framed gates, because the frame does not rot or loosen.
