Wide is safer
A wide step gives a generous landing — no need to line your feet up with a narrow tread while carrying a tray or a toddler. It is a comfortable place to sit, too.

Built as a box, not stringers
For a low deck, a framed box step is solid underfoot and does not flex. Wrapping it in the same fascia keeps the look consistent.
Placed where people walk
Steps go where the traffic goes: toward the yard, the gate or the grill. On this deck, when railing was added later, a gate was placed right at the step so the path stays direct.

How many steps does a deck need?
It depends on the height of the deck above grade. Low decks may need one step; higher decks need a full stair with handrails.
Can steps be lit?
Yes — riser or step lights improve safety at night and can be wired during construction.
Do steps need a handrail?
Codes require handrails based on the number of risers. We build to the requirement for your deck.
