Adding a Double Gate to a Privacy Fence for Vehicle and Trailer Access

A privacy fence is only as practical as its gates. On this project the owners needed to get a vehicle, trailer or mower through — so we built a double gate that almost disappears into the fence.

A gate you barely notice

The double gate is built from the same boards and finished in the same dark stain as the fence, with the top line matched to the run. From a distance it reads as fence, not as a hole in it.

Steel posts for heavy gates

Gates are where wood fences fail first: the hinge post takes all the leverage and slowly leans, and the gate starts to drag. These gates hang on steel posts, which do not twist or rot, so the gates keep swinging freely.

  • Wide opening for vehicles and trailers
  • Matches the fence exactly
  • Steel posts prevent sagging
  • Secure latch and drop rod

Why a double gate instead of one wide gate

Splitting a wide opening into two leaves halves the weight on each hinge post and cuts the swing space needed. Day to day you open one leaf to walk through; the second opens when something bigger needs to come in.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should a double gate be for a trailer?

Measure the trailer and add generous clearance each side. We size the opening on site based on what actually needs to come through and the turning angle.

Will a wood double gate sag?

Sag comes from the hinge post and the gate frame. Steel posts and a properly braced frame are what keep a wood gate square.

Can the gate be automated later?

Yes, if planned for. Tell us at the estimate so posts and framing are sized for an opener.
