An automatic gate is the one thing on a property that has to work every single day, in the rain, with a car waiting behind it. Most of the reliability is decided before the opener is chosen.
Swing, slide or cantilever
Swing gates look best and suit most residential driveways. They need clear space to swing through and reasonably level ground along the arc — a driveway that rises toward the road is an immediate problem for a gate that swings inward.
Slide gates run parallel to the fence line and need room to one side, which makes them the answer on short driveways and slopes where a swing gate cannot open.
Cantilever gates slide but carry their weight on a counterbalance rather than a ground track, so nothing runs in the dirt. They cost more and they need more side room, and on acreage where a track would fill with mud they are worth it.
Sizing the opener to the gate, not the other way round
The most common failure we are called out to is an opener working at the limit of its capacity. A gate that is heavier than the operator was rated for will still open — for a while. Then it starts stalling in the cold, or the arm wears, and you are replacing an operator that was never big enough.
Weight comes from what the gate is made of and how big it is. A solid cedar double gate is a lot heavier than an ornamental iron one of the same width, and it also catches far more wind. That is a real load in North Texas.
The posts matter as much as the opener. A drive gate post carries a swinging cantilevered load thousands of times a year, and it has to be set deeper and braced harder than anything else on the property.

Getting power to the gate
The gate is usually the furthest point from the house, which makes power the practical constraint. Trenching a supply out to the road is the reliable option and the more expensive one — but it is done once.
Solar is a genuinely good answer on acreage, where a trench might run hundreds of feet. It works well provided the panel is sized for the number of cycles per day and is not shaded — and gates get used more than people estimate. On the acreage around Venus and south of Red Oak, solar is often the sensible choice.
Access, safety and the details worth specifying
Think about how everyone gets in: a keypad at the driver’s window height, a remote or two, and a way for deliveries and visitors to reach you. Consider what happens in a power cut — a manual release you can actually get to matters.
Safety devices that reverse the gate if something is in the way are worth having on any automated gate, particularly where children or livestock are around. All of this is part of our custom and automatic driveway gate work.
