Picture-frame border
A picture-frame border runs boards around the perimeter of the deck, perpendicular to the field boards. It hides the cut ends of the decking and gives a clean outline, like a frame around a picture.

Fascia boards
Fascia covers the sides of the deck framing. Without it you see the joists and rim board; with it, the deck looks like a solid platform. Matching the fascia to the decking colour makes it read as one piece.
